Outline the research methods used by other research

The research methods that other researchers have employed in conducting this research include survey research. Moreover, use of Cronbach’s Alpha to assess the internal validity of the research is also advisable. Further, Cronbach’s Alpha helps in determining the job satisfaction and job attitude factors in a more précised manner. The research philosophy used would be one that accounts positivism. Positivism is a research approach, which holds that there is objective reality in the study being conducted and that the researcher knows that whatever responses he will get will be true reflection of the results obtained. As this research is quantitative (explanatory) in nature; positivism can be employed. The targeted population is the banking industry from which eleven banks will be carved out, and from each bank, 29 employees (non-managerial) will be surveyed.

There are a lot of factors involved in the literature of employee turnover, but this study focuses largely on the two primary variables, which are found pertinent in turnover intention. The first variable is demographic variables and the job related variables; the second is job attitude and job satisfaction. The literature review indicates eight variables with respect to job satisfaction. These include satisfaction with the immediate supervisor, company identity, kind of work, amount of work, physical work conditions, co-workers, financial rewards and career future. The research design is chosen according to the sought literature review; one that is based on a survey format. The industry that is chosen is the banking industry and selected literature review is in alignment with the research design chosen. Job satisfaction is the most extensively investigated job attitude as well as one of the most widely examined subjects in organizational psychology (Judge, Church, 2000)

I.            - Describe and justify your research methods for the selected industry:

The primary research design is chosen to get the feel of the related literature, and for conducting the research; the secondary research design is chosen. The independent variables used in the study are demographic variables and job related variables. These two independent variables are found dominating in the review of the related literature. The dependant variable used is turnover intention is directly correlated to the actual behavior behind the turnover; which is dependant as suggested by the literature. The survey collection method will be used to gather data for the study. The questionnaire designed has two parts: first part asks for the demographics and the other section asks for gauging job intention. There are 55 randomly arranged questions that specifically measure the eleven variables mentioned above.

Further, the research is subject to certain limitations. The results of the study won’t be applicable outside Singapore due to changes in national preferences. This limits its generalizability. In addition to this, the use of only survey questionnaire in itself is a limitation. Survey questionnaires are subject to response and non-response bias as it depends on the person being interviewed to manipulate the results, and do not give true insights. As evident from the literature review that only 36% responded to the surveys conducted earlier, this is quite a low response rate.

a.      - Research Design (Primary and Secondary Research)

The research design for this particular industry, that is budget hotels, specifically in Singapore is the primary research for conducting literature review and then for the purpose of gathering information on the chosen study, secondary research is conducted. Much of the research design in the literature review was quantitative and therefore; this research design has been chosen. As the study aims to predict specific causes of an employee behavior (turnover/ intention to leave); thus the nature of the study is quantitative. The study is field study with natural setting and no manipulations in the natural setting with cross-sectional time horizon. Moreover, this will be an explanatory study and in an explanatory study we move from specific to general. This type of study is also is also called deductive in nature. After the analysis of the results it will be find out that what the factors that contribute to turnover intentions are.

b.     Data Collection Tools - (Interviews or Focus Group, or Survey, or Observation- you must justify why you choose one of these methods and rejected others)

The data collection tool used in this research is survey questionnaires, as for generalizability of the research findings, survey method is most suitable. The questionnaire has two specific sections. The first section intends to tap the demographics of those interviewed. These include, age, sex, marital status, length of service in the present organization and years of experience. The second section of the questionnaire taps employee behavior, job satisfaction, job attitude, and turnover intention. As the observational study is conducted in a natural setting, it is not possible to gauge employee behavior in-depth as their work does not speak what their intentions to leave are. Further it is best suited for a case study, which isn’t the focused of this study. Focus Groups.............................
