A Telemedicine Opportunity or Distraction? Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Innovative IT programs like patient-current telemedicine consultation services can save lives and reduce prices. Yet, despite wide-ranging pilot-testing, few such services have achieved long term practicality. Partners HealthCare's TeleStroke service, in complete operation and supervised by the Massachusetts General Hospital Neurology department, is fiscally self-sustaining and provide a critical need. Clinicians at a few hospitals that are participating are interested in using telemedicine for other medical uses outside stroke care. Should Partners enlarge its service? What organizational, clinical, and technical problems would arise if Partners enlarge its offerings that are telemedicine? How can these issues best be handled? The case is designed for an MBA or advanced undergraduate class in IT Management.

Module I, Use IT for Business Value, introduces pupils to the resource based perspective of direction and also the mechanics through which IT (hardware, software, network, and data resources) can add business value-such as by being fixed in a good or service (Netflix case), by creating valuable information that enables management to make enhanced decisions or improve operations (Harrah's Entertainment and Catching Tax Cheats cases), and by functioning as a platform for collaboration (this Telemedicine case).
