Marketing the $100 Laptop (A) Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

In 2002, Professor Nicholas Negroponte, a successful venture capitalist, author and co-founder and Chairman Emeritus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab, has announced its intention to build a PC so cheap as to make it possible to provide the Internet - and multimedia-capable machines millions of children in developing countries. Concept - then often called "$ 100 PC" - was launched at the Media Lab in 2003, before turned into a separate non-profit association, One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), Negroponte founded in January 2005. While skeptics, including technology industry leaders, argued that it simply can not be done. With its innovative design and technology, Negroponte and his team have proved them wrong, but struggled to sell the concept and machinery in the world of education ministries, which will purchase laptops for school children. In addition, by 2007, many other low-cost options for PC and OLPC appeared not started shipping yet, leading some observers to wonder if the nonprofit should review its strategy and options
