GROK: THE NEXT STRATEGIC STEP Case Solution

BUSINESS STRATEGY

The business strategy of the GROK can be considered as a research based strategy rather than a market backed strategy. The product is made as one of basis rather than a more market intimation product. After the creation of the product, the new CEO was sought out of the industry experience to focus on the market of the new product, Grok.

The organization is still in its beginning phases due to heavy research, and the team mostly complies of experienced technology research and developers rather than sales professionals. This hints that the organization is more focused on creating a more technology based products rather than a direct approach to sales team calling the shots. Further, the free use of software is applied to all the clients until they fully develop the product with commercial perspectives, then the fee of licensing applies.

According to the data in the scenario, more focus is being provided to the research and the application of the GROK and the MHT technology, with less focus on the desired growth and consumer. So, that more focus can be provided on the development of the product, with enough cash flows to back the development.

This type of business strategy is called limited growth strategy, with more focus on the developmental and the ideas of the organization, with limited selected clients.

MANAGEMENT

According to the information provided in the case Management of the GROK, is categorized under two boards, being the supervisory board consisting of the directors and investors, and the technical advisory board which consist the learnt and individuals who excel in their field of robotics or engineering. (Page 6, First Paragraph, (Rothaermel, 2014))
The recommendation being provided to the management, to pursue growth is to consider Non-executive directors in the board rather than investors as this will create a more strategically organized governance board which will focus on the commercialization of the organization. The investors are the members of the organization but doesn’t need to be informed of any operating decisions and the running of the organization.

MARKETING

The marketing of the GROK Organization can be taken by the organization being situated in the Silicon Valley, which is one of the biggest commerce hubs in the entire world. Access to highly qualified university individuals and public correspondents are available, one of the reason of appointing Mr. Branitzky was the commercialization of the NUMENTA Technology. (Page 6, Paras 2&3, (Rothaermel, 2014))

The recommendation being provided is the usage of the software licensing after the commercial product is created is a great aspect, but as Jeff Hawkins is a renowned member of the technology age, organizational meetings and seminars with Hawkins being in the top or a part of team will influence the position and the image of the organization.

FINANCE & ACCOUNTING

The finance and accounting part of the organization provides a cash budget or cash position of $ 3 Million to the organization which is very small budget for the perceived growth. The owners of the business, Mr. Hawkins and Miss Dubinsky, though being wealthy from their past projects cannot further their own money for the organizational growth. (Rothaermel, 2014)

The recommendation provided to Grok Organization is to encompass a public offering or to secure under the rule of a big organization as the growth stage of the organization needs heavy financing to support it.

BUSINESS ETHICS

The business ethics of the organization has to be considered, with allowing for the business to succeed without using immoral business perspectives or exploiting the consumer, suppliers, or any other stakeholders. The organization’s model of licensing the applications of products has ethical issues as the development has no identified costs, and the cost proposals identified will be exploiting the end user on the usage.

The recommendation being provided to the organization is to consider a principle based approach on the ethical means of operating a business, and creating a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to incorporate business ethics in order to avoid law suits or any such ordeals.

CONCLUSION

In the conclusion of this report, as the GROK organization still is considerably new and in the development phase. The organization needs to seek a big name to its dependence such as those of the IBM, and Microsoft, or other players; such that there should be no impedance on the growth perspectives of the organization. It is highly recommended to approach the big names of the industry and get acquired but with some covenants and controlling right still being retained by Jeff Hawkins and Miss. Dubinsky.

The other method of the IPO and others is not suggested as the organizational value is still undetermined at this point and Mr. Hawkins might lowball the company.......
