Managing Linen at Apollo Hospitals Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Apollo Hospital in Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore is a health care provider comprise of 250 beds. In 2013, managing bed linens, including bed sheets and pillow cover, accounts for 5.1 million Indian rupees. This case demonstrates the management of linen by the Apollo Hospital.

Dr. Ananth Rao, head of quality at Apollo was considering to introduce the new mathematical programming techniques of broad significance that could optimized the cost of linen management and would have prominent impact on the bottom line of Apollo. However, the quality so far provided by the Rao and his team had never generate a complaint.

Each bed in the hospital was given with two bed sheets and a pillow cover, although there was an additional usage of 2% due to multiple reasons such as linen becomes dirty, wet, etc. Hospital already had a safety stock of linen at least of two days and any linen sent to the laundry was returned on day d+2. The core aim was to develop such a mathematical program that could have a significant impact in minimizing the cost of linen management.
