Jieliang Phone Home! (Video), DVD Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

At Precision Electro-Tek's mobile phone production facility in southern China, thousands of operators - smart and capable young men and (mainly) women like Jieliang Hao are inspired to enhance line productivity through modest innovations for faster construction and have found many ways to increase their performance. Sadly these two procedures occasionally accidentally clashed, presenting a management challenge. The case help students analyze the implicit premises managers make in arranging work inside a factory.

Jieliang Phone Home (Video), DVD Case Study Solution

These assumptions represent theories of worker behavior and motivation in combination with managers' beliefs of what constitutes "best practice." Pupils are offered an opportunity to dissect these lean manufacturing theories and comprehend that in this particular implementation, implementation of best practice without adequate consideration of the interplay of theories on motivation has led to unanticipated results. The case offers an opportunity to explore the connection between work design and reparation, and understand the differences between motivation and compensation. The case frames the job of the general manager in setting up compensation systems and work structures in a very conventional and explicit setting, one where linkages should be clearly observable yet assumptions are often deeply buried and implied. Our anticipation is that pupils will see the lessons generalize to most, if not all, of the organizations where they have worked.
