Governance and Sustainability at Nike (B) Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Two members of Nike's executive team must determine what the sustainability aims to propose to Nike’s CEO and to the corporate responsibility committee of the Nike’s board of directors. Established in the year 2012, the case scenario tracks the evolution of Nike’s approach to environmental and societal issues from its beginnings in student demonstrations against the labour conditions in supply chain in year 1990s through development of board-level corporate responsibility committee in the year 2001 to the development of Sustainable Business and Innovation strategy in year 2009.  In this facet, Hannah Jones, Nike’s VP of SB&I, and the Eric Sprunk, VP of Product & Merchandising, are working to finalize the company's next round of sustainability objectives for presentation to the CR committee.

When Nike signs on to the Roadmap to Zero, a Greenpeace-inspired initiative to eliminate the discharge of poisonous chemicals into the water supply by 2020, the company's goal-setting procedure becomes more complicated.

Jones and Sprunk must determine whether to recommend that Nike dial back other sustainability targets to satisfy with the zero toxics challenge, change its commitment to zero toxics, or find another solution.
