The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill: The Politics of Crisis Response (B) Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Subsequent to the sinking Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in last phase of April 2010, the Obama administration coordinated a massive response operation to contain the enormous amount of oil propagating across the Gulf of Mexico.

Bringing prevalent criticism, intense public curiosity and, eventually, the response conformed to the Oil Pollution Act of 1990; a national law that the crisis would soon disclose was not well understood - or even accepted - by all applicable parties. The two-part case scenario depicts the efforts of superior officials from U.S. Department of the Homeland Security as they fought to coordinate the actions of a myriad of celebrities, ranging from numerous national associates (including key members of the Obama White House); the political leadership of the affected Gulf States and sub-state authorities; and the private sector. Case A provides a summary of the disaster and early reply; discusses the formation of the National Incident Command (NIC), which had responsibility for directing response activities; and researches the NIC's efforts to coordinate the actions of various national entities. Case B focuses on the challenges as it sought to participate with local and state actors, the NIC encountered - as the crisis deepened throughout the spring as well as summer of 2010, an effort that will develop increasingly complicated.
