The Breakfast of Champions: Can General Mills Make the Dough with Pillsbury (A) Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Why are so many corporate initiatives such as mergers and acquisitions, downsizing or re-engineering, look good on paper, but is it so bad? This case gives rise to one of the examples of corporate initiatives: the acquisition of General Mills' Pillsbury subsidiary of Diageo PLC. Although, General Mills financial advisors felt that balances and products of the two corporations are complementary and made a perfect match, the organizations were very different. Any shift in corporate governance mean things will not change. Kevin Wilde, vice president and general director of training for General Mills, was part of the transition team responsible for helping postacquisition integration runs smoothly. In the case identifies several issues relating to the management of the integration and includes human resources and organizational information, marketing initiatives, strategies, reporting, plant closures and operational changes. However, these cases were designed to motivate students with the importance of understanding the human system and the development of people management skills. As an introductory case for leadership and organizational behavior courses such cases encourage students to think about the skills required of them to be effective in human systems.
