Sustainable Tourism: Heritance Kandalama Resort of Sri Lanka Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

In 1992, when the Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings PLC (ASHH) Sri Lanka has announced its intention to build a tourist resort in the region of several ancient archaeological sites and rich natural biodiversity, local communities, and environmentalists fear the negative consequences for the region. In response to the resort developers have started a sustainable and permanent environmental, social and community development programs to save the physical environment, benefiting the surrounding community and the involvement of local people in the operations of the resort. In the resort, Heritance Kandalama, continued to receive many international awards for environmental management and social and community development. It was the first hotel to receive the Asian Green Globe 21 certification in 1999. The resort also raised the profile of its parent company, ASHH, as one of the pioneers in the field of sustainable tourism in Asia.
