It began operations in July 2001 as a single undertaking with two workers, and grew to an organization with about 200 employees over a span of ten years. The founding objective of Sumeru Software Solutions was to support Art of Living's (AOL) social development initiatives through gains made from delivering top quality services. The Art of Living (AOL) was founded in 1981 by Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji as a not-for-profit, educational and humanitarian non-governmental organization participated in stress management and service initiatives. Art of Living offered stress -removal plans, which comprised breathing yoga, meditation and techniques that were anticipated to help people eliminate tension and experience inner peace. Sumeru had developed a unique culture that united the Art of Living principles of Sadhana, Satsang, Seva and smiling and corporate culture in the face of adversity.

The organizational culture was based on the AOL values of a worry free mind. Consistent together with the AOL principles, the four pillars of Sumeru culture were trust, caring, sharing and ethos. It purported to follow a peaceful yet competitive manner of doing business called "Serene Dynamism." Sumeru attempted to balance profitability, productivity and happiness. Harish Ramachandran, CEO of Sumeru Software Solutions, had created an enterprise which was distinct from other IT organizations.
