MAGELLAN VERSUS QUESADA Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

INTRODUCTION:

Magellan, a highly skilled Portuguese sailor, who has earned the confidence of the people by his marvellous achievements, claimed that he had found the shortest passage named “paso” to the Southern Sea at the 40th degree of latitude. He later offered King Charles I of Spain to lead a fleet of this passage and thus, opened a direct route to the Spice Islands and India for Spain. King Charles I gave him the fleet of 5 ships under the supreme command of Magellan, as well as under the supervision of a Spanish Captain named Juan de Cartagena, to explore the passage, which he has discovered.

DILEMMA:

As the journey started following inconsistencies have occurred:

  • Magellan did not share his plans with his crew even after asking several times by its crew.
  • Magellan also divested the powers of Cartagena and put him into the custody, as he insisted Magellan to discuss his plans with other members, and he refused to salute him.
  • Magellan also deposed Cartagena’s successor, Antonio de Coca, because he was Spanish.
  • Magellan later realized that the map made by Martin Behaim on which he found “paso” is completely wrong, even after realizing the fact he did not communicated the fact to the entire crew.

Thus, Magellan has fallen short in dealing with his crew members ethically and effectively, due to which he has been left behind at Port San Julian by his crew members headed by Gasper de Quesada. Moreover, he has involved his personal prejudices in making significant decisions rather than making them rationally and along with collaborations of other fleet members.
