Dedicated to accelerating the development of safe, effective, accessible, preventive HIV vaccines, the International Initiative for AIDS Vaccine (IAVI) new ways to address the lack of incentive structures, which have hampered the progress of AIDS vaccines and other diseases that affect mainly poor people in tropical countries. As an intermediary non-profit organization, IAVI gathered partners from different perspectives and motivations of non-commercial, industrial, governmental and research sector in the development of vaccines. IAVI has played several roles: the honest broker, integrator and communicator of knowledge about HIV vaccine research, a passionate defender of an AIDS vaccine at the national and international levels, as coordinator and director of research and development initiatives. In 2008, IAVI has invested further in its own laboratories and research infrastructure, moving upstream step in vaccine development partnership and clinical research.
