Executing Strategic Change: Understanding the Critical Management Elements that Lead to Success Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Despite the access to management approaches, many methodologies, and literature on strategy execution, research suggests that seven out of ten organizations fail to successfully carry out their strategies. To figure out what these organizations do differently, ten key management elements for successful strategy execution were identified from the literature as well as seven company benefits that could be recognized if these rudiments were performed efficiently. Next, 93 organization were surveyed, ensued by focus group meetings with senior supervisors.

While mastery of formal methodologies and development of business cases are significant, successful strategy execution is critically dependent on having a portfolio of change plans that are aligned with the strategy of the organization. Further, managed within a culture conducive to transform and this portfolio has to be supported by the tactical leadership team. There are special activities that organizations must take to identify which components of their strategy execution capability must enhance in order to take their performance to the next level.
