Question # 1a:

Salamon (Salamon, 2001) among others, argued that to properly understand industrial/employment relations one needs to understand its context. Identify four dimensions, briefly explain why each might be considered important for Trinidad and Tobago and explain why the four dimension that you identify might neither be mutually exclusive or exhaustive.

Answer # 1a:

The Four dimensions which would be considered for the Trinidad and Tobago industrial and employment relations are:-

  1. Industrial Democracy
  2. Job and Employment Quality
  3. Industrial Competitiveness
  4. Social Justice

These dimensions are important for the industrial and employment relations for the Trinidad and Tobago as the industrial democracy is that the employees would be given the right to participate in the organization by providing their own ideas and sharing their views with the management. The industrial relations also include autonomy in which the employees of the Trinidad and Tobago would be given the degree of freedom and discretion which would encourage the responsibilities and cause satisfaction.

The Job and employment quality is based on providing benefits to the employees of Trinidad and Tobago by providing them health insurance for their well-being, giving them responsibilities which would overall improve and develop skills.

The industrial competitiveness is another dimension which impacts the industrial and employment relations in which the companies are able to compete with their competitors by hiring skilled labors which would help the company gain the upper hand and improve the productivity and growth of the company. The social justice is one of the last dimensions in which the employees are provided with equal opportunity, given their fundamental rights in working with the company and also treated equally in the organization without causing discrimination. These dimensions are identified as mutually exclusive, as the dimensions are relatable with each other. The dimensions cannot be achieved with the help of one another.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Answer # 1b:

The organization which I am familiar with is “bmobile” which is established in Trinidad and Tobago that causes implications due to employment contracts on the evolving context of employment relations which is that the contract signed between the employer and the employee is that kind of contract which is used in the labor law in which it discusses the wages being paid, time period as to work in the firm and cannot leave the company when the person desires.

The company “bmobile” uses the employment contract for the hiring of employees and the implications in which it causes that many of the socialist criticize that the employer cannot ask for raise as stated in the contract, the employer cannot be allowed to leave the company until his time period is completed according to the contract even though the employer is unsatisfied by the tasks, responsibilities and working environment. This causes certain impact to the employment relations in which sometimes the contract based hiring would lead to unsatisfactory of the employee, decrease in the performance of the company and fall of the efficiency on the employee performance.

Question # 2a:

Provide a clear definition of collective bargaining and explain its purpose.

Answer #2a:

The term collective bargaining refers to the negotiation between the employer and the group of employees.  The negotiation which is done between the employer and the group of the employee is of wages, overtime pay, working time period, sick leaves, compensations, retirement and health benefits. The employer may sometimes agree with the negotiations or may also disagree depending upon the company’s situation, employee’s overall working time on the company, employee issues and other conditions. The purpose of the collective bargaining is to improve the relations between the employee and the employer which would lead to positive relationships. Sometimes managers disagreeing with the negotiations would lead to employee dissatisfaction, protests from employees and negative performance from the company. The employees could sometimes also go to a labor union to take action on the company if the employer disagrees upon the negotiation.

Question # 2b:

Reflecting on your knowledge of the contemporary Caribbean workplace, carefully evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of collective bargaining as an employment relations institution.

Answer # 2b:

The collective bargaining on the Caribbean workplace have been implemented, but it has been characterized as a conflict instead of cooperation as most of the employees are hired from contracts instead of compacts creating certain restrictions when it comes to negotiations with the employer. On some of the small islands in the Caribbean, it is difficult to determine that the companies have collective agreements registered or not. The labor union collaborates with the employees and employers to negotiate agreements. In some of the countries of Caribbean, the labor union are established where there are no difficulties and issues between the employer and employee while on some of the areas the labor union are not available in which the employer takes benefits of the employee by not agreeing on the collective bargaining which the employee presents such as increase of wages, more overtime pay, health insurance and retirement benefits. This causes certain implications between some countries in the Caribbean.................
