Democracy in Zimbabwe: The Presidential Bid of Morgan Tsvangirai  Case Solution

In the southern Africa country of Zimbabwe, world focus turned to the coming election in early 2002. Once viewed as a model of comparative prosperity and possibility, along with democracy in sub Saharan black Africa, the country confronted political violence, an AIDS outbreak, and food and fuel shortages, under the rule of longtime president Robert Mugabe, the onetime revolutionary leader in what was once white-ruled Rhodesia. This case centers around the political strategy and effort of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), an opposition party headed by former labor leader Morgan Tsvangirai. The MDC faced the daunting challenge of waging a successful and peaceful campaign notwithstanding what were broadly seen all over the world as anti-democratic measures taken by Mugabe-including property seizures of white-owned farms and possible vote-rigging.
