BPs Macondo: Spill and Response Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

This case began reporting a variety of factors that may have contributed to the massive oil spill Macondo, noting that BP, its partners, and the government has made decisions that helped lead to the accident. He then discusses the response to the BP spill and the government. This helps to provide some context for the Obama administration's decision to ask for a $ 20 billion fund from BP and BP's willingness to go along with the request. The case also shows the safety performance of BP to the spill, which may also have contributed to the creation of this fund. After this case describes the various ways in which the U.S. government is involved in the production of oil, including the leasing of land, regulation of drilling and assessment of fines and damages. To provide contrast to the payments BP case shows the payments made by Exxon spill tanker Exxon Valdez. The U.S. regulatory system then briefly compared with the regimes in other countries.
