Atheros Communications Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Managers Atheros, a leading provider of wireless LAN chipsets, must decide whether to join the Special Interest Group (SIG), proposed by Intel to end deadlock on standards 802.11n (11n), the next generation of "Wi-Fi" technology. Two factions supporting rival proposals 11n standard IEEE, the main standard-setting organization in the electronics industry. Working outside the formal processes of IEEE, a SIG from Intel will promote compromise that could break the deadlock. In addition, SIG could provoke a backlash, resulting in the approval of the various IEEE standard for 11n. In this case, Intel and its allies SIG will suffer severe time to market failure in the use of what promises to be a big, growing market chips.
