To dewater the former Magma Mine and overcome the exploratory shaft, the RCM team was confronted with expressing and handling about 2 billion gallons of naturally gathered water in addition to about 300 million gallons per year of new inflow.

The goals of the team were to realize the dewatering safely, in an economically feasible and quick manner, while also protecting the environment and managing the interests of local stakeholders. The team had four alternatives to consider: pond evaporation and release, reverse osmosis, treat, and irrigation pipeline. In determing the best option, RCM and Salisbury had to consider the seriousness of stakeholder concerns and the possibility of jeopardizing the RCM endeavor that is larger.
