My telco: ethics Case Study Solution

Q1. (A.)Is the proposal legal under the consumer protections the FCC passed on October 27, 2016?

  • Project A:

According to Bill, the project fell outside the consent of FCC as the BA solution would use the metadata only and would not use the main content of the communication.

  • Project B:

According to Mary, the project B would not violate the new consumer protection law by FCC as data would be captured by social media profiles which are already public.

  • Project C:

According to Lynn, the project would not require any consent from the customers as the consumers’ important details such as phone numbers would be hashed.

Q1.(B.)Is the proposal legal under the consumer's protections currently legislated in the US?

  • Project A:

The project A proposal was not against the new consumer protections as it was giving data access of the communications of the consumers to the company and consent is not required.

  • Project B:

The project B proposal did not seem to violate the consumer protections as the data made public by users on their social media was being used.As in current legislation consent is not required.

  • Project C:

The project C was applying the new consumer protections as the data was being hashed for personal details such as mobile number before providing it to the clients of My Telco in previous legislation, consent is not required to be obtained from the consumer.

Q1. (C.)Applying the Utilitarian, rights, fairness, common good and virtue approach to ethical decision making respectively, what are the benefits and risks associated with the proposal?

  • Project A:

The project A proposal will help the company reduce its churn rate. However, the proposal A will lead to privacy of customers being disturbed as they won’t feel good if the company tracks their data.

  • Project B:

The project will give the company know the bad comments of the customers so that their perception can be changed. However, if customers find about the comments being read by the company then in future they might not make comments about their views on social media.

  • Project C:

The company will have an access to the consumer data without violating the law. However, if customers get to know about this then the reputation of the company will decrease.

Q1. (D.)Based on your assessment would you accept, reject, or request a revision of the proposal? Explain

I would accept the proposal as it will not use the content of the communication and will reduce the churn rate resulting in an increase in reputation and revenue of the company.

Q2. (A.)What might a process involving a DSS in the ECC’s deliberation look like?

The decision support system in the ECC committee is that the committee considers whether the consumer protection Act is violated or not if the decision is taken.

Q2. (B.)What are the pros and cons of such a process?

The advantage of the process is that it will save the company from heavy fines and reputation risk. An effective decision can be made by the company.

The disadvantage of such a system is that it will lead to analyzing the whole plan before making a decision and the decision will take time. Good plans might get rejected by ECC due to laws..........
