The case is a series of four brief, imaginary vignettes. Almost all the vignette shine a light on the scenario's macro-subject of ''stimulating others in the management pretext, and illustrates the deliberations involved in getting the subordinated to accomplish particular company goals. The very first vignette profiles Lydia Geller, a recently-promoted VP, as she openly addresses her subordinates for the very first time, each of whom had formerly been part of her peer group. The 2nd vignette summary Jeremy Sawyer, the CEO of a software organization, as he re-evaluates the sales output of the organization and, in particular, its principal salesman, Victor Mason. Given Mason's unequal value to the company, Jeremy debates with the activities he can take to make sure the ongoing satisfaction and motivation of Mason.

The 3rd vignette profiles Warren Soroka, the manager of sales at a logistics service provider, as he's driven to have a dialogue with a long-term employee who has merely remained “passed over” for the promotion in goodwill of a younger employee. He asserts the best technique to convey the selection to the "passed over" worker in ways that ensures his continuing enthusiasm and performance in the organization. The fourth vignette profiles Rachel Murphy, the manager of academics at Barrymore University, as she is forced to give a performance review which includes both negative and positive feedback. Given the mixed temperament of the performance review, she debates how best to convey such feedback in a sense that ensures continued drive and the employee's comprehension.
