Brazil was triumphant over a WTO trade dispute concerning the U.S. against U.S. cotton subsidies. Brazil has been authorized to respond, not specifically by charging retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. but also by revoking intellectual property rights protection on various things, including patents for chosen U.S. pharmaceutical products and copyright protection for U.S. movies and music.
Despite revoking IPR protection, the Brazilian Ambassador to the WTO, Roberto Azevedo, was determined to offer an arrangement: the U.S. can make a yearly payment to Brazilian cotton farmers. The aim is to abase members of the U.S. Congress as they negotiate the U.S. Farm Bill, so that they will drop the cotton subsidies completely.
