Marshall High School Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Marshall High School Case Study Solution

Introduction

Marshall High School was opened in 2013, the school was specially designed with the concept of “house system”. The school had four different houses, each house contained 300 number of students with a housemaster to manage the house. These houses are connected with core facilities through enclosed passageway.

The school soon after its establishment faced some challenges from their staff members resulting some bitter conflicts among the faculty members. These conflicts gave rise to some interpersonal as well as interdepartmental problems. The school recently experienced some more serious threats from outside of its environment, followed by a teacher assaulted in her class. This created a sense of insecurity among the staff members. In the second year of operation the school faced some budgetary issues resulted from cutting budgetary expenses, restricting hiring for vacant positions, leading staff members to teach students outside of their houses.

David Kane, was appointed on, July 15 with a move to turn around the Marshall High School, which at one point faced threat of its closure, due to series of violent incidents some of them also caused damage to the school property.

Organizational Design

The structure of the organization is based on “house system.” The design is complex having a separate building that links with ‘core facilities,' they have four different houses with independent housemaster for each house, they also have a different department with individual department heads. Houses hold various academic sections; they usually hold competitions with each other. The Marshall high school is also equipped with laboratories, library, auditorium, cafeteria, lobby area, separate gyms for boys & girls along with locker rooms. They also hold separate office section for administrative activities.

Analysis:The structure of Marshall high school is based on, Functional Structure (departments) according to Johnson, Scholes & Whittington (JS&W) model. It focuses on departments’ individual performances, objectives & does not coordinate with other departments.(Johnson, 1990)

Recommendation:David Kane should focus more on internal control functions, try to control violence, identify those element that ignites such clashes, design policies after consultation with the authority group inside the High School to overcome the issue of outsider interference, bring upon consciences over the lock door policy as it might provide opportunities to outsiders to intervene and assault the faculty & students as well. A clear hierarchy should be laid out and must also be clearly defined.

Intergroup Issues

Marshall is facing some stiff internal issues, according to one of the department teacher, they have some issues within their department heads. The teacher was complaining that department head interferes in their autonomy, they attacked one of their housemasters that the program they offered lacks substance & was not in line with the curriculum guidelines. There also seems some conflicts between the department heads & the house masters over the proposed policy to lock the doors followed by series of assaulted incidents inside the premises of the Marshall High School.
