Helen Priano, who is supervisor at the Michigan Cereal Facility of General Grain, had 2 crucial choices to make in early February 2002: whether to fire a 30-year veteran worker and whether to drop charges against an employee found stealing business property. Priano needed to be known as a leader that was rational, and she understood that she managed these problems and upcoming union contract negotiations would build her standing as a leader within the plant.
