Kosmos Energy and Ghana A Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Kosmos Energy (Kosmos) was founded in 2003 by a tiny group of oil and gas business experts backed by private equity capital. The company's first strategy was to explore for oil along the West African shore. In 2007, Kosmos and its own partners announced a major discovery in deepwater offshore Ghana. Three years later Kosmos was at cross-roads in December 2010.

First oil from the Ghana discovery, now called Jubilee, was delivered in November 2010. Kosmos now needed to choose its its own presence and its corporate future in Ghana. Should the company stay a pure "E" business or grow to E&P, and should it keep its interest in Jubilee's development? Integral to both questions was how the business reap capital from, or could raise capital for, the field that is Jubilee.
