Too Much Alcohol at a Remote Construction Site Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

In September 2014, an American expatriate project manager at High Tech Building Pvt. Ltd. (High-Tech) received a call late night saying that an engineer at a remote job site in India was badly sick after consuming alcohol at an employee bash. The driver would not take the sick worker to the hospital unless permission was given by the project manager, but would giving permission drag High tech into a scenario that is complex? The expatriate manager was uncertain of the legal ramifications involved in injury or death due to drinking. If the media was involved additionally, he was concerned about the effect on the business. Because he was an American in a multinational company with workers that are Indian, the narrative was possibly saleable.

Moreover, was it prudent to advise the sick employee's parents however, or should he call the head of the human resources section for guidance? As the project manager, he would have to make the final decision. It'd been just a couple months since he arrived in less than a month and India since the start of work on the current project, and now he had a disaster to cope with.
