Korea Telecom: Building a GiGAtopia (A) Case Solution

Case Summary

In the year (1981), Korea Telecom Co. was founded to provide their services to the government telecom services business. It Korea Telecom is mainly operated from its parent region (South Korea). The case revolves around (Korean Telecom) in which the organization intended to invest ($4 billion) to develop a (GiGAtopia) technology that puts mobile (5G) in the next generation. There is a challenge for the company in terms of selecting and prioritizing the best sector as the R&D team have identified five sectors.

After analyzing the potential of all five sectors it is recommended that the company should invest in (Energy Sector) and (Security and Surveillance Sector) out of all sectors. The recommended options could help the company to tackle the numerous technical challenges and to gain revenue. Moreover, these options help the organization to reduce the confusion created among Dr.Hwang and his team in selecting all the identified sectors or selecting any one or two sectors that are suited best for the organization.

By implementing recommended sector organizations able to influence their network capabilities by using low cost for their products. These two sectors present positive growth rates with good revenue hitting about $100 million. There are various opportunities gained by the organization after implementing recommended sector it presents that organization able to increase its network capabilities and able to block competitors. These new infrastructures help the organization reduce installation and storage costs

Case Strategic Analysis

The recommendations mentioned in the first paragraph are further analyzed under strategic analysis. We have performed the SWOT/TOWS analysis in the appendices section of this report to do a strategic analysis of how the company could implement the recommended strategies to combat potential risks internally and externally. Moreover, it is also determined how the company’s strengths could be used to attain discussed opportunities and implement recommended strategies. Both the recommended options are discussed in detail to provide the benefit and help to reduce the risk and threats that relate to the implementation of new 5G technology. See the analysis in (Appendix 1) to get more details about the strengths and opportunities of the recommended options.

External and Internal Threats (KT) Faced

There are a few external factors faced by Korea Telecom during the period Dr.Hwang joined the organization as a CEO. In this period the overall region of South Korea faced demographic consequences because the overall globe faced a lower productivity rate. The second threat from the external environment relates to the high economic competition and very lower growth rates for the product and technology.

Looking at the internal threats and challenges the organization faced in this period first includes the flat growth and margins in revenues under the domestic market. The decision of implementing new networks for the subscribers also consider a very expensive decision because it takes almost 2 years for the organization to recover its market position. Further strategic analysis to analyze the threats by using SWOT/TOWS Analysis, which can be seen in (Appendix 1).

Risks in Developing and Commercializing (5G)

Looking over the development and commercializing of 5G technology presents various advantages and benefits but on another hand, there are several different risks and challenges also raise in front of the organization during the development of GiGAtopia technology. The CEO of the organization Dr.Hwang believed that being first in the market and entering the next-generation technology upgrade creates a situation critical. The first and mainly highlighted risk with this technology is that it ultimately increases the attack surface.

However, the 5G technology connects millions and billions of devices that make it possible to get a dangerous attack. There is also a risk of privacy violations, faster data extraction, and disturbed internet infrastructure that increase because of 5G. The other risk after commercializing 5G relates to the IoT because more IoT creates more problems in terms of insecure designs. The last risk faced by the organization in developing GiGAtopia technology relates to high investment risk. For further analysis relates to the risk of new technology see (Appendix 1).

Methods to Minimize Risk

The first way Korea Telecom needs to implement is to reduce investment risk because it presents an extreme range price for the development of 5G devices. The data present that the government adopted the price criteria and set the standby price for the 28-GHz band over the lowest price. Now there is a way in which an organization set a license term for five years and divides the agreement half-time for 3.5-Ghz which helps the organization to reduce its investment risks.

Now looking over the other ways that help in reducing the other security risk and attack risk in which KT have to use the sector identified by the organization team. The security and surveillance sector help the organization to gain revenues and market leads after reducing the rising challenges and risk related to the new 5G technology. ............
