Google Maps Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Introduction

Google Maps API

Google Maps application programming interface (API) technology revolves around usage of satellites to provide an overhead view of Earth. The technology allows the users to view the projections of routes and traffic conditions in real time. Google has been constantly developing the technology over the period from initial road map views to now panoramic views through aerial vantage points. The technologies making use of Google Maps includeandroid, iOS, Web, Web Service. Not only that, Google uses Android, Chrome, Firebase and Google Cloud Platform to develop the technology further. (Blog, 2011)

The direction giving apps includes route planning, traffic conditions and street views. Initially the language used to create maps and improve upon them were JavaScript and XML, but with passage of time it went on to include API for Adobe Flash and used Web Services for creation of images, driving directions and geocoding. (Arthur, 2011)

Problem Statement

The service was free of cost at time of its launch, to everyone using it, but with extensive usage by some businesses too much free loading was putting pressure on Google to charge for this service. This led to creation of several pricing strategies like Premier Tier. The road services are free of use to the masses and businesses using less than 25,000 map loads per day. In access of 25,000 loads will be charged according to various pricing schemes in which the business falls. (Constine, 2012)

To improve the efficiency of its services Google created API keys to gain control over usage of the maps. The keys enable the maps on the devices of its customers. These keys have been developed for businesses registered with Google for its services. As of now the services can be used but with Google’s intention to launch key based maps the existing users will have to include these changes. (Quarton, 2016)

Free non-commercial Provision and Uses of GoogleMap API

Google is a search engine notable for providing information pertaining to everything in the world. This also led to creation of providing mapping services free of costs. Google provided its mapping services free of cost like all its other services. This meant that it generated high goodwill and dominated the competition given by MapQuest and Yahoo. For commercial uses the businesses made extensive uses of the free services. Generation of maps using JavaScript and XML was not sufficient enough to overcome growing need of customization and personal maps. (Constine, 2012)

After overtaking the competition Google set out to increase its goodwill. It can be said that Google captured the market on basis of its goodwill alone and with free mapping services it is seeking to maintain and increase its goodwill.

Websites Mapping Feature and Other Interface Experience

Web Mapping Features

Google has created sufficient goodwill and free services over a long period of time that have attracted many users to use its services. Usually people do not go for other applications particularly after Google’s strong dominance in providing free services. However given the pricing strategy implementation and also of API key system, the users may be bit disconcerted in continuing to use Google for mapping services. (divimaps, 2016).........................
