Global Carbon Emissions: An Interactive Illustration Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

With the help of an interactive game played by a group of students, this case demonstrates the tragedy of commons. Students are divided into 10 regional blocs, during the United Nations world climate conference. Students use data present in the case to set the limit of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for their countries in the blocs, as it left only one day and there is no agreement among the regional blocs.

Students have to determine whether or not their bloc should approve the proposal, when at the last minute carbon tax proposal circulates. This case is accompanied with an Excel Spreadsheet that could be helpful for students to understand the effect of various carbon emissions levels on Net Domestic Product (NDP). The case can also be utilized as an icebreaker because of the requirements that demand to work in groups.
