Felipe Calderon: Leading with Light and Power (B) Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

This sequence of cases explores how leaders get their team focused on examining framing, and acting upon complex choices. The A case offers an inside look as President of Mexico, Felipe Calderon, works with his cabinet ministers to determine how to turn around a corrupt, highly unionized, and poorly managed state-owned company which distributes electrical energy to Mexico City along with the adjacent environs.

While previous governments over several decades were not unaware of the issue, none wanted to risk the political or economic impacts of protracted strikes and power outages in one of the planet's most populous cities. Yet, it's now clear that corruption and the company's poor financial performance are causing significant damage to Mexico. A fundamental topic is the president's role in making sure his team is completely prepared to make the right selection and has done its homework. The B case, to be handed out during class, provides the real choice standards used. The C case, to be handed out at the end of class, describes how they do it and what the team ultimately decided.
