ENERGY MANAGEMENT PROJECT Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

PURPOSE AND USAGE PATTERNS:

The Empire State Building is a high rise in Manhattan, New York City, USA. The building has 103 stories and at rooftop tallness is 1250 ft (381 m) tall. The tallness while including the reception apparatus tower is 1454 ft (443.2 m). The Empire State Building was outlined by William Lamb of the modeler firm Shreve, Lamb and Harmon Associates. Around 3,400 specialists were included in the development of the Empire State Building with authority records demonstrating five employees died during the construction(Building, n.d). It took only 410 days for the Empire State Building to be developed. The building was formally opened on May 1, 1931 when President Herbert Hoover turned the lights on with a push of a catch from Washington, D.C. A race up the stairs to the 86th floor is held yearly, the competitors must climb an aggregate of 1,576 stages. There are 73 lifts in the building, including 6 cargo lifts. Since such a large number of organizations are housed in the building, the Empire State has its own particular postal division.

The building itself costs $24,718,000 to assemble, and when the expense of the area is incorporated this figure increases to $40,948,900. This expense was not as much as half of the aggregate expected expense due to great depression. The Empire State Building has a lightning pole close to the top which is struck by lightning around 23 times each year. There are perception decks on the 86th and 102nd floor. These vacation destinations are gone to by around 4 million individuals yearly.

Empire state building was not so effective and efficient in terms of energy usage and something had to be done as soon as possible because a lot of emissions were released in the environment by the empire state building and similarly it was becoming very costly for the building to fulfill its expenses such as utility bills, oil and gas usage etc. Therefore, efficient retrofits had to be introduced which could be useful in saving energy and release limited emissions in the environment on the contrary.

Previously, it was estimated that the empire state building prior to 2008 faced heavy expenses in terms of utility cost annually which was summed at $11 million ($4/sq. ft), annual CO2 emissions 25000 metric tons (22lbs/sq. ft), annual energy use 88k BTU/sq. ft and the peak electric demand was around 9.5 MW (3.8 W/SQ. ft. inc. HVAC).(The Empire State Building, n.d).........................
