De beers Canada: The Attawapiskat Context Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

De beers Canada: The Attawapiskat Context Case Study Solution

Introduction

De Beers, a global mining organization, worked the Victor Mine, an open pit precious stone mine in Canada, situated inside customary domain asserted by the Attawapiskat First Nation. To foster the mine, De Beers needed to follow government regulation, satisfy natural guidelines, and in particular, arrange utilization of the land with the First Nation(Mulholland, 2016). In doing so, the company had faced a ton of issues regarding their extension. The company needs to make the agreement with the Attawapiskat First Nation in order to extend its mining there since the first Nation has refused to work at mining due to several issues.

Question-1

Government role in building relationship between resources companies and first Nation

The improved production relationship between the local government and first nation helps to improve the socio economic gaps between the people and other Columbians and support resolution. The Canada mining sector is shifting from small scale approach that were there for the past 10 years and shifting towards the broader approach. There is an increment of indigenous people in different processing techniques such as decision making processes also, are sometimes in any event, taking value positions in mining projects on their regions.

Indigenous people can develop their career lines through mining projects on their land, but what really make it successful is the responsibility of the government and social sector to make this opportunity for the people and turned into an action. This cannot be done easily because a lot of people don't have the same educational resources. Sometimes many indigenous people are not good at availing the new career advantages. For this purpose government takes a huge role.

The government need to provide opportunities and other resources such as educations and counselling to the indigenous people so that they can acquire skills and take advantages with the project provided by the mining companies on the first nation land.  This help the indigenous people to take career objective. This should be considered as the long term goal because this plan requires a lot of systemic changes and continues to proceed for life.

Question-2

The issues raised in the case is the responsibility of provincial government. In Ontario, the regulatory bodies are "Ministry of energy", "Northern development of Mines" and the "Mines and Minerals division". DeBeers is seeking the Ontario government regulations approval to overcome the waste side of the land and to create and built up the “Victor mine site”. This is the responsibility of the government in Ontario to look into this matter. A large part of the jewel mine waste that DBC would store into such landfill, is reusable and salvageable. How DBC is looking for Ontario endorsement for the additional landfill is suspect. Without directing a full review or inspecting options in contrast to landfilling, DBC has applied for "97,000 cubic meters of landfill volume", which is barely short of the "100,000 cubic meters limit" which would set off a "Comprehensive Environmental Assessment". DBC as of late got endorsement for a destruction landfill of the very same size, and presently they are requesting that Ontario support a second destruction landfill bringing the all-out jewel mine undertaking destruction squander volume to right around "200,000 cubic meters". This shows the responsibility of the government towards the issue.

The issues discussed in the case faced by the first Nation community includes the financial, stress issues, suicidal thoughts etc. In my opinion, both the Canada and Ontario is highly responsible for the issue faced by the local committee because of their lack of attention towards these communities which results in indigenous people.

Question-3

Attawapiskat has not turned into a "mining" town in the customary sense. Fly-in camps, which are currently the standard for present day mines, including Victor, lay out transitory foundation at their destinations without any inclination of fostering a super durable town site. This makes the test for the local area, for example, Attawapiskat to catch their social and monetary social conflicts that might happen.

DeBeers wanted its mining extension in the local community to promote indigenous people to take the opportunity and turn into the action. There were a ton of issues looked by the local area, Benefits haggled in the mining arrangement were not settling the issues, notwithstanding the arrangement of work open doors and installment of millions of dollars to the First Nation. In outrageous disappointment, the local area refused work at mining and set barricades. DeBeers helps the local area in deciding their social and financial worth by expressing that it utilizes exactly 100 individuals from Attawapiskat at the mine, yet from that measurement it's not satisfactory the number of those individuals keep on living on the hold.....
