Rick Cohen, president and CEO of C & S Wholesale Grocers, trying to decide whether and how to implement the concept of self-managing teams in their warehouses. Eight months ago, C & S began to act as the main wholesaler to & P throughout New England, a decision that is consistent with the growth strategy of the firm, but also represents a significant increase in daily throughput. Cohen was concerned about whether the current activities of the company would be able to meet the needs of all its customers and maintain high levels of customer satisfaction, for which the company was known throughout New England. With the successful implementation of the concept of self-managing teams was credited with improving organizational performance and competitiveness. Cohen asks how this concept can be implemented in the context of time-consuming, labor warehouse environment.
