Bangkoks Second Stage Expressway Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

This case describes the transport privatization political complications that may accompany the private financing of infrastructure projects. The case tells the story of a Japanese construction company and its relationship with the Government of Thailand. Firm, Kumagai Gumi, proposed to build a $ 1 billion, 20-kilometer expressway in Bangkok, and manage it as a toll road, a 30-year concession agreement. But in 1995, a contract dispute, encourages the Government of Thailand to make Kumagai Gum first to open the road, but then sell it to the Thai investors. The case allows for discussion of both technical and political, focusing on the details of the contracting arrangement, but also raises the question of the internal political dimensions in social projects related to non-domestic private investors.
