Argentina-based Cresud managed 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres) of property in South America. For 20 years, the publicly traded company’s strategy had been to purchase underutilized properties and convert them into farmland for cows and crops.

In 2014, Cresud's CEO contemplated if the strategy was suitable in the face of dipping commodity prices, input businesses that were more robust, and potentially favorable changes in the political environment in Argentina.
