British Columbia NICU Bed Allocation Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Following a report indicating that in 2007 to 2008 the state had sent 98 expectant moms and newborns to America for treatment, the state was contemplating adding more neonatal intensive care (NICU) capacity. After the issue was covered by one of Canada's national newspapers in a front page report political pressure was mounting.

The MHS requested the executive director to propose other advancements and bed apportionments to address the situation. This case is useful in a management science of service operations course. Students may be requested to describe a model to address the scenario, and pupils with familiarity with a graphical simulation could be asked to construct a model.
