Blessed are the Peacemakers: Senator Danforth as Special Envoy to the Sudan Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

After the attack on the Twin Towers on September 11, the appointment of Senator John (Jack) C. Danforth as a special representative of the president of Sudan has taken on a much deeper meaning. As ordained Episcopal priest senator, closely supported by the President, has brought a new strategy to end decades of civil war. Danforth moved to strategically align fragmented efforts for peace in the United States, Europe and Africa around one initiative under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and sought to engage the religious Muslim and Christian religious leaders in resolving disagreements between the North and the South. Unlike previous envoys, Danforth offers specific tests to determine whether the peace between the two sides was still possible. Furthermore, he insisted on the actions to measure progress, and as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, he dragged the entire Security Council in Africa to push the peace process forward. Danforth philosophy is to listen to both sides, not to condemn the atrocities committed by both sides, but in order to bring peace. This case allows students to consider a strategic approach Danforth in search of peace and to compare and contrast it with the efforts of the world in the conflict in Darfur. In addition, he considers the peace efforts in the ethnically and religiously divided societies and examines the peace process in the light of some religious leaders in the country. It can be used in courses on religion and politics, civil wars, ethnic conflicts, negotiations, national security, governance, Africa policy, public policy and international relations.
