Frugal innovation' is a new style of initiation that is popular in India and other countries in the global south, where citizens confront international challenges including poverty and climate change with limited resources. The solutions it places forth must be low-cost, robust and simple to use, and possess the possibility to be targeted at influential people.
However, used and solutions have a tendency to be developed locally, and some essential challenges are presented by local initiations that are scaling. The authors describe how to go about creating a 'hybrid model' for scaling an initiation, which entails focus to five baseline variables: price, active demand, a sustainable business model, outcome demonstration and powerful leadership.
