In the late phase of January 2009, Thomas Fekete, Handling Director at Barclays Wealth in London, redeemed the most illiquid positions in the so-called Wealth Outright Return Fund (WAR), among Barclays Wealth's most appealing overseas funds of hedge funds, and stopped the Fund's financial investment activities. For Fekete, the choice to state the WAR funds a "failed experiment" marked a turning-point.
Choice one was to restore the WAR Fund. Alternative 2 was to shelve the WAR Fund and launch a brand-new fund of UCITS controlled funds domiciled in Europe with UCITS credentials.
