Taran Swan at Nickelodeon Latin America Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Taran Swan at Nickelodeon Latin America Case Solution

BIG BETS Strategy and its pros and cons:Big Bets, as evident from its name, was a strategy designed to focus all of its money that Sawn had gathered after convincing the New York office, along with all their efforts to have an effect that her business plan is viable, so as to get the remaining budget for the complete launch of Nickelodeon in Latin America.

The idea of Big Bets was to throw a huge, brand experience party at a largest cable trade show "Jornadas" where they could draw the attention of at least 15000 attendees in order to generate brand awareness in Latin American public. The strategy was to make or break. The entire budget was allotted and efforts were focused on making the event successful.

Despite the efforts put, the strategy could result as a success or a failure. However, the strategy was based on an idea as well as there was a possibility that the strategy could lead to higher profitability or complete loss, along with no alternative strategy, and no budget for backup could lead to the shutdown of the whole program before it even begins.

On the other hand, the strategy was designed by Donna Friedman, who was an experienced, enthusiastic and out of the box thinker. The plan was good as by putting all efforts and money in making the show successful through a reputable medium, the chances of the plan being successful were absolutely high. The show also attracted advertisers for whom Swan had planned to conduct workshops where advertising executives were convinced that Nickelodeon knew kids better than any other and advertising on their channel for the products for kids would be a wise decision.

Swan Key Ingredients for Launching the Channel:As the business developed, Swan focused on expanding the channel in Latin America as there were nokid's channels, which displayed kid's entertainment as much as Nickelodeon could.

For that reason, Swan made a strategy constituting of the main ingredients. Her priority was to gather the best team for every function of the channel. Secondly, she wanted to sell the channel to cable distributors without compromising on their price quantity. Thirdly, she wanted to attract the advertisers as both selling the channel to cable and attract advertisers were challenging and for that she relied on her team, which was the best, along with a startup, Big Bet strategy, which hadto be essentially successful in order to achieve all targets by having the first impact in the mind of both the sellers and advertisers.

Weaknesses in the Launch Strategy: MTV was made responsible for selling Nickelodeon with its sales and advertising team. Previously, these teams had entirely different brands to work and Nickelodeon was completely different as the targets were kids as compared to MTV targets. Therefore, the selection of team was not ideal regarding this matter.Secondly, these teams had to work for both MTV and Nickelodeon, leading to putting more efforts and time without extra pay. Thus, this was a demotivating factor for sales and advertisement team. Swan also wanted the cable operators to place Nickelodeonon the basic platform where all the customers could watch Nickelodeon without paying any premium. The cable operators also agreed to include nickelodeon on the basic platform however, they did not agreed to pay for programming. This proposition would not be acceptable to Swan as she does not want to compromise on the price.

Swan’s Personnel Selection, Recruiting Process and Replacement of Bryne: One of Swan's key ingredients regarding the successful launch was that she wanted the best team of her choice.................
