Watson Children’s Shelter Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Watson was a licensed emergency care provider, providing a safe, nurturing environment for children who were victimized by physical, sexual, and/or psychological maltreatment, neglect, abandonment, or family disaster. Several of the children arriving at the shelter were seriously emotionally disturbed or learning disabled. Other children arrived as casualties of maltreatment that was secondary, coming from scenarios in which they detected sexual abuse, material or domestic violence.

Watson had been since 1997 under the direction of Fran Albrecht and was set up in 1977. Albrecht had an outstanding reputation as a leader and supervisor of the nonprofit. It was June 2011 when Albrecht was determining which of three alternatives to recommend to the Board of Directors, as Watson had faced a demanding operational position. Its own Board and Watson had gone through a time-consuming due diligence procedure that led them to the decision to enlarge and construct an additional facility. Within a year after the second facility was completed, placements of children had decreased dramatically; where Watson had been turning away about two children per week, it even had closed one facility part of the time and now had excessive capacity in each facility.

She was concerned concerning the impact as well as the public perception on the Board members and also her organization, together with other stakeholders, including the kids. She understood she was uncertain which option to take, although Watson needed to adjust and act quickly
