Yahoo! In China Case Study Solution

Case notes:

The case study revolves around the story of Chinese journalist and poet who has been imprisoned for ten years only because he raised his voice as a journalist.  He has exercised his right of freedom of speech for which he has been warned to not to quote the government instances on pro-democratic movement and criticizing the government officials for their decisions and their so-called democratic instances. The stance of the government was that he has provided the state’s secrets to foreign entities by sending an e-mails using Yahoo and disclosed inter control party directives.

The role that has been played by Yahoo is the main point of concern and the ethical issue here.Yahoo have provided information related to Shi Tao to the government disclosing all the details. This is the loss of ethical value for the company as the main ethical principle of confidentiality is compromised, but in the given scenario they must obey the Chinese laws, morally it was a wrong step but legally it was in the right direction.Since many of the Yahoo employees were at stake by the China government. They have proved to be good corporate citizen and compromised some of the ethical value.

The Chinese internet environment is much conservative and restricts the freedom of speech. Many restrictive laws are the repressive measures against the growing technological community. The laws should not restrict the freedom of rights of the people and should be transformed considerably. Moreover, Yahoo’s stance was valid since they signed “public pledge of self-discipline” with the Chinese internet industry and the local laws compelled them.

Yahoo should inform the users about the risks and should not keep the data on PRC servers; they should take up maximum transparency measures to avoid unfavorable events. .........................
