This case is portion of a four-part series that analyzes the amalgamation of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center along with the National Naval Military Center at Bethesda - the priciest, largest and contentious hospital merger in US history. The series contains: A case and Case A teaching note (Direction of VADM Mateczun); B case and case B teaching note (Army/Navy cultural problems); Epilogue (brief judgment); Film - award winning short documentary. The A case concentrates on the direction of Vice Admiral Dr. John Mateczun, a three-star Navy admiral who led the merger. But in his drive to see the plan through, Mateczun alienated friends and co-workers and stretched the limit of military ability, expended his political power.
The case allows discussion of leadership styles and the importance of communication issues, negotiation, persuasion, and private nature. There are two company cases and a 17-minute film. The B Case targets the issues of merging organizations with significant ethnic differences. It may be educated together with the (A) case or on its own with the video.
