In 2007, Walmart was sourcing roughly $750 million in seafood per annum. Although output from the fisheries in the world's had dropped to 3 percent of production amounts in the year 1900, the business 's quantity of seafood business was growing at about 25 percent per year.

To help address this challenge as portion of the company's recently-announced sustainability strategy, a goal was establish by Walmart to transition to selling 100 percent MSC certified wild. To accomplish its goal of selling just accredited wild-caught fish, Walmart would need to work through its suppliers to raise the amount of fisheries and processing plants in the MSC certification program.
