THE WOODVILLE REPUBLICAN: FAMILY FIRM OR COMMUNITY ASSET? Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Andrew Lewis was the fourth generation writer and editor of a little family-owned paper in rural Mississippi. Lewis faced the challenges of running a weekly paper in a business that was shifting and he was worried that the members of the next generation of the Lewis family were not interested to take over operation of either the 133-year old newspaper or the household-held insurance agency. As he views himself as a steward of a vital community asset in addition to both a steward of a family business; Andrew is divided about what he should do. Although Andy brought in a good living for himself and had efficiently maintained the insurance agency and also the paper;  he believed that he paid a high price and sacrificed his time to attain the success. The case examines the potential successors to Andy Lewis as manager and publisher of the paper; the economical, organizational, and logistical challenges related to managing a rural weekly paper; and also the role that the supplementary company performed in generating earnings.
