The Path to Insight: Cognitive Abilities for Dealing with Ill-Structured Problems Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Most of the problems we face in life are ill defined, in that doubt is inherent not only in whether the target may be reached, but in how best to conceive of the present state and the target state.

To deal effectively with such 'severe' problems, the writers claim that thinkers must understand just how to develop a problem conceptualization that transforms the ill-defined issue into a well defined one which can be handled. Two broadly studied strategies to achieving this are divergent thinking and convergent thinking. While these remain significant, the writers assert that they are insufficient to solve ill-structured problems.

They propose that a third skill is imperative: framework' to break. They describe all three of these thinking skills and demonstrate how a certain type of issue - the penetration difficulty - may be utilized to support the capability to rest framework.
