The Indian Removal Act and the Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Native Americans were subjected to a protracted and agonizing process of forced removal from their property. The first file is excerpted from Andrew Jackson's First Annual Message to Congress in 1829 as well as the 2nd document from Jackson's Second Annual Message in 1830, the year the Indian Removal Act was passed.

The 3rd and 4th records cover the Congressional disagreement over the move of Indians, which led to divisions and strong partisan splits between the North and the South. Document three is excerpted from Whig Senator Theodore Frelinghuysen of New Jersey's six-hour address to Congress opposing Indian removal. A final record shows the reasons for their resistance along with the Cherokee outlook to removal represented by a memorial letter, written in 1829 to the United States Congress. A statistical portrait follows the documentary evidence.
