Sustaining the Akshaya Patra Foundation (A) Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

TAPF, a Bangalore-based NGO, has been hailed worldwide for running the world's biggest school meal function. It featured through 16 centralized and 3 decentralized kitchens across 9 states of India; as having the ability to reach out to 5 million children by 2020, it states its Mission 2020.

The challenge the foundation faces in achieving its stated mission isn't only of scaling up by 2020, but also of maintaining the financial sustainability of its operations in view of increased government expense on alternate social sector schemes like Right to Food, which might reduce or restrict allotments to the Mid-Day Meal scheme.

The case aims to study the critical challenges that Akshaya Patra confronts in sustaining its operations and the several sustainability initiatives undertaken by the NGO to meet the many challenges it faces and the opportunities that it might further take to innovatively fulfill its mission of feeding 5 million children daily by 2020. It uses frameworks to assess these sustainability initiatives at Akshaya Patra and looks at the interrelations between the different dimensions of sustainability.
