Shelter and Poverty Assistance in Nouakchott Case Solution

The commission for Social Inclusion, Poverty Alleviation, and Human Rights, an agency of the government of Mauritania, had to decide as to how and whether to, modify its Twizé program of shelter and poverty assistance during the summer of 2002.

The program was piloted on the outskirts of Mauritania's capital, Nouakchott, in 1999 and then extended to three other similar resettlement areas in 2000 and 2001 in the Dar el Beida resettlement area. However, the Commissariat was stressed by the fact that it could not afford to employ the Twizé program more extensively in its present form, and that the pilot had been high-priced.
