Radio Station WEAA: Leading in Challenging Situation Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Corinne Fiske, newly hired director of news and public affairs WEAA public radio station licensed and owned by Morgan State University (MSU) in Baltimore, Maryland is facing some important issues, and expressed concern about the level of support and motivation of its staff for her and for the station . For many years, teachers at the university ended the station as an educational resource for students and as a community service for the city. Over the past five years, the station suffered from turnover in key positions (eg, four CEOs in four years, the position of Director of Membership open throughout the year). The station had no fundraising drive for at least two years and have had an operating loss of about $ 200,000 per year in recent years. Several hands-off approach to management has been used at the station. Fisk was recruited to help the plant to grow and realize their potential. She was an experienced journalist and host of a radio show. She had an entrepreneurial spirit and to see himself as an agent of change. She inherited a large staff of 30 employees, 29 were volunteers, one was paid, many have been at the station for a long time (two to ten years). Most of the volunteers did not have journalism or transfer of experience, in addition to its work on the station. Quality of news and programming station talk show suffered from a lack of knowledge of the state radio broadcast standards and the lack of commitment of some owners. With Fisk began working at the station, she had some problems: employees late, not meeting, resistant to change, and arguing / fighting, as well as retirement. What could she do to ensure its success and the success of the organization? It urgently needs to develop a strategy with her boss and a plan of action. "Hide
